One thing that I love about a new year is that it gives you the opportunity to reflect on what’s working and make changes to what’s not. In my running life, I try to do smaller versions of this after each training cycle but at the start of a new year it’s like one big clean slate where I can really look at the past year or years of running and see what (if anything) I need to do differently. It’s also a great time to set goals, and boy do I have some big ones for 2018!
Here they are:
- Break 4 in the marathon
- Break 2 in the half marathon
2017 was a huge year for me in terms of breaking through some running plateaus. I PR’ed in the 5K and marathon and was injury free all year! I attributed both of those goals to getting real about my diet and finally learning to run by feel. Oh I still use my Garmin and wear it regularly 24/7 but when I run, I use it to record what happened not to guide what is currently happening and that is a huge difference for me.
I’m hoping that by continuing with these strategies I can continue to see breakthroughs although I will admit that both of those goals feel pretty ambitious to me at the moment. Mostly because I know all too well how quickly illness, weather conditions, injury, and just life in general can derail a perfectly good training cycle.
But I’m laying it on the line and hoping for the very best. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and productive 2018! And here’s to hitting our goals with smiles on our faces…because we really couldn’t ask for more than that!
